Requirements for the Registration of
a Used Vehicle 
Previously Registered in Connecticut

If vehicle is from out of state please refer to Registration of a Used Vehicle from Out of State.

To apply for a registration, you will need proceed to your local DMV full service branch or satellite office and provide the following:

Emissions - If the vehicle is not in compliance with Emissions, you may register it first, however you will need to have the vehicle Emissions tested within 30 days of the date of registration or you will accrue a late fee. You will not receive a notice for testing.

To find out if the vehicle you are buying is in compliance, check the date on-line or call (888) 828-8399. Please have Vehicle Indentification Number (VIN) ready.

Sales and Use Tax - Passenger vehicles and light duty trucks are charged six percent sales tax based on the book value or bill of sale, whichever is higher. For other vehicle types sales tax is calculated at 6% of the bill of sale price.  Please see Sales Tax on Registrations for more information.

Property Tax/Parking Tickets/Suspensions - Vehicles cannot be registered if the registrant has delinquent property taxes or parking tickets, or if the registrant has had their registration privilege suspended.

In addition, a vehicle exempt from sales tax by a family or business relationship cannot be registered unless all local property taxes and parking tickets have been paid, and/or marker plate suspensions are cleared for the previous owner (seller).

Federal Odometer Statement - Also, if vehicle was purchased from a licensed dealer or a leasing company, a properly completed Federal Odometer Statement must be submitted.
